Nice pub with great value ales let down by average grub
East Dulwich Tavern (EDT) Review
“On the corner of Lordship Lane and Goose Green the East Dulwich Tavern or EDT, as it’s known to the locals, sits proudly at the heart of East Dulwich. One of the most established and well liked pubs in South East London the EDT has vintage charm, loads of character and a lovely atmosphere. The sizeable upstairs function room, is available for hire and suitable for a variety of events; there’s a monthly film club, a monthly Jazz night and social events as well as weddings and birthdays, you name it.”
I meet up regularly with some friends I used to play football with for the mighty Rapid Skillsearch in Brighton. It’s supposed to be a monthly meet but we’re definitely averaging quarterly at best. The location this time was the EDT, picked by Jason (or ‘Sason’ as he’s now known thanks to the typo on the ‘reserved’ table sign).
Owned by Antic, the EDT is a very spacious pub with an area each side of a central bar. The area to the left as you enter is generally occupied by sports fans at the weekend as the EDT shows plenty of live sport. The area on the other side, known as The Side Room & Snug is quieter and lighter thanks to the skylights and is available for private hire. Upstairs is the lovely looking Lodge, which is also available for hire.
We were here for the football but true to form, Sason booked us a table on the wrong side of the pub where there was a screen, but no sound. There are several good ales available at the EDT including Harvey’s, Doom Bar, an offering from local brewery By The Horns (both £3.60) and Adnams – Lighthouse for a pretty unbelievable £2.80 a pint.
As a general rule, Sason doesn’t eat when we meet up (no one knows why) so Jack, David and I made up for it by eating twice, opting for a second main rather than pudding. Round 1 saw Jack have the Roast Organic Welsh Black Sirloin, David the Tandoori Chicken Ciabatta, mustard and roast potatoes (£8.50) and I had the Free Range Confit Chicken Leg and Breast. Both roasts came with garlic & thyme roasted potatoes, cauliflower cheese, kale, honey roasted carrots, Yorkshire pudding and gravy but were pricey at £14.50 each. I thought the roasts were decent but not worth that kind of money but I guess that’s London for you.
Round two saw a round of sandwiches, David and I had the Roast Sirloin of Beef Ciabatta, horseradish and roast potatoes and Jack tried the Tandoori Chicken Ciabatta (all £8.50). Again, decent food but sadly nothing special.
All in all, the EDT is a great, friendly pub to spend a lazy Sunday in, regardless of whether you want to watch any football that may be on. I was amazed by the value of some of the ales on offer but if I ever revisit the EDT I might take a leaf out of Sason’s book and skip with the food.
