Good beer, good food, good pub
The Bull, Islington Review
The Bull is on the corner of Upper Street and Theberton Street and is part of Mitchells and Butlers’ Castle brand along with many other local pubs like The Ranelagh and The Alwyne Castle. It’s a cool, urban space with plenty of mixed seating areas and a great range of draught beers available.
The food menu is full of modern British pub dishes and there are weekly events – every Wednesday is ‘Wonderful Wine Wednesday’ with 20% off all bottles of wine. Friday and Saturdays have Soul & Funk DJs from 20:00, there’s Saturday Brunch from 11:00 – 16:00 and roasts on Sundays.
I’ve been to The Bull a few times now and it’s been consistently good. The draught beer selection is excellent with the likes of Brooklyn Lager available and the layout and decor lends itself to a mix of occasions. There are small tables near the bar for 2-4 people and a few larger areas for groups at the back as well as up the cool spiral staircase.
I had the Cheese Burger w/ Pulled Pork (£12.50), which is the same as the one I fell in love with at The Ranelagh although I must admit it didn’t have quite the same magic for me second time round and the equivalent I had from Smokehouse’s Saturday brunch menu kicked this one in the face.
The Bull is a solid choice in Angel and has plenty of regular clients. It serves up good pub food but the main selling point is the wide selection of beer available and relaxed atmosphere making The Bull a great place to meet up with friends and spend some time at the weekend.
