Are you brave (or stupid) enough to take on the Viper?
The Joker, Brighton Review
The Joker is one of the pubs I’m glad to have nearby – there’s always a good atmosphere and the awesome Orange Buffalo are in charge of the kitchen, serving up free range chicken wings coated in a range of homemade sauces.
It took us a while to visit, mainly because The Hare & Hounds across the road serves more trendy craft beer than The Joker but after a couple of really good visits on nights with great music, The Joker has become a bit of a favourite.
Residencies in Brighton pub kitchens have become the norm these days, with La Choza @ The Hare and Hounds, Curry Leaf Cafe @ Temple Bar and DoughBo about to takeover from Troll’s Pantry at The Hobgoblin. It allows these pubs to offer something different to the pub grub you might expect and it’s a great way to ensure great quality food. Win win.
Mrs Foodie Brighton was working from home so we went down to check out The Joker’s lunch deal, which is one of the best in Brighton. Portions of wings are normally £7.50 but on Weds – Fri from 12-4pm you can have wings, curly fries and a beer for £10 or £8 with a soda. They also offer 3 for 2 on baskets of wings every Wednesday from noon!
I’d sampled Orange Buffalo’s delicious wings a couple of times in Shoreditch, where they have a food truck so I had a good idea of what to expect at The Joker. Orange Buffalo offer wings coated in BBQ sauce or one of 4 increasingly hot sauces – Original, Woof Woof, Vincent and Viper.
As we approached the bar, we passed four LADS crying after taking on the infamous Viper Wings, made with Scotch Bonnets, Naga and Capsaicin (the thing that makes chillies hot)! We like our food hot but we also like to enjoy it, so played it safe and went for a portion of Original and a portion of BBQ.
If you’re not in the mood for wings, there are chicken or veggie sandwiches available too, but let’s be honest – it’s all about the wings here.
The wings themselves were perfectly cooked and a decent size (you get 8 per portion). Sometimes I find buffalo sauces overpowering and too vinegary but Orange Buffalo’s recipe has just the right balance for me. There’s still plenty of kick though so make use of the celery sticks and indulgent blue cheese dip that comes with the wings. Their rich, sticky BBQ sauce is great too.
They are served with curly fries, which you frankly don’t see enough of these days – they’re the king of fries for me and Orange Buffalo are more than generous with their portions. De-li-cious.
The menu is good value at The Joker and becomes a total bargain if you manage to get down there for one of the deals. With the possible exception of Bincho Yakitori, there’s nowhere better for wings in Brighton.
