A very good gastropub in the heart of Kentish Town
The Oxford, NW5
“A fine Victorian pub that combines old traditions with modern style. Ornate wall lights and old wooden furniture contrast sharply with the stainless steel of the open plan kitchen in the middle of the pub. We are located within a stone throws distance from the HMV Forum, a perfect venue for those pre gig drinks and dinner.”
I was at The Oxford for a working lunch with a friend of mine and came away fully satisfied. The Oxford is nice and light as you come in and has a mix of traditional and modern decor. There’s a pub section as you enter, with large tables and a bar with a good selection on draught beers including their own ale and then a dining room setup (as shown below) as you head towards the back of the pub with a mix of booths and smaller tables.
This is the current lunch menu we ordered from. My friend opted for the Gammon steak, fried eggs, hand cut chips at £8.50 and I went for the Ale battered North Atlantic haddock & chips peas, tartare sauce at £12.50. There was an error with our order meaning that it never made it to the kitchen so we ended up having to ask the staff where our food was after about 40 mins or so. It was pretty disappointing as there was hardly anyone else in the pub so it’s not as if our order was lost in the rush. Once they’d apologised and put the order through again the food came out pretty quickly.
Very impressed with The Oxford. I thought the gammon was a bit small but I was thoroughly impressed with my Haddock, very crispy ale batter and fresh white flaky fish on top of a good size pile of chips. It was very quiet at lunch but I imagine it gets busy in the evenings and weekends, especially when as it’s close to the Kentish Town Forum. Good food, good beer, what else do you need?
