Authentic Vietnamese food in a friendly setting
Viet Grill, E2
“Viet Grill’s reputation is built on the fact that we are unique in serving our loyal customers what people actually eat in today’s Vietnam, with much emphasis placed on the careful selection of the ingredients.”
My partner, Antonia and friend, Mark were on our way to see the fantastic We Were Evergreen at the Village Underground in Shoreditch and stopped at Viet Grill for some dinner before the gig. Viet Grill is one of many Vietnamese restaurants on Kingsland Road and is one of the best presented after it’s recent refurbishment.
We ordered a couple of starters to share and a main each from the large menu. The Chilli Salt & Pepper Squid (£6) was fantastic, crisp, tender and with plenty of fresh chilli. The Green Papaya Salad (£7.50) was a little small considering we opted for the larger size to share but was very authentic none the less. Antonia opted for the Lamb Neck Curry (£8.50) as her main which was pretty tricky to eat as it was served on the bone (we were expecting it to neck fillet). It was very rich but maybe a bit heavy. Mark had the BBQ Pork Loin with Rice Vermicelli (£8.50) and I had the Bun Sa with Corn Fed Chicken (£9.00) which were both big bowls of Vermicelli with a light chilli sauce and different toppings. We also had a Mango Lassi each, which was delicious.
We thought the food was good at Viet Grill but the starters shone through over the main courses. That’s not to say there aren’t great dishes on the menu, I just don’t think we found them. The fish dishes all sound delicious and there’s a big range of Pho to try out as well. All in all it’s pretty good value for what you get and we will happily go back to try some other dishes.
